About Norooz

Norooz or Nowruz (Persian: نوروز‎‎ ; literally “new day”) is the name of the Iranian New Year, also known as the Persian New Year, which is celebrated worldwide by the Iranians, along with some other ethno-linguistic groups, as the beginning of the New Year.

Traditional HaftSeen table at Norooz

It has been celebrated for over 3,000 years in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin and the Balkans. Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Armenia, China, Georgia,Tajikstan, Uzbekistan, Irak and Syria are among countries where all or part of the population celebrates Norooz.

Goldfish, Norooz, Haftseen

Norooz is the day of the vernal equinox, and marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It usually occurs on March 21 or the previous or following day, depending on the year. The moment the sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year, at a very precise instant with the precision of seconds. This moment is the same in all the locations around the globe. (unlike for the Gregorian new year). At this instant families who have been united as much as possible at the same place around the haftseen table, observe the rituals.

Although having Iranian and religious Zoroastrian origins, Norooz has been celebrated by people from diverse ethno-linguistic communities for thousands of years. It is a secular holiday for most celebrants that is enjoyed by people of several different faiths, but remains a holy day for Zoroastrians.

Norooz flags city of Irvine California

Norooz day now will give all Californians—regardless of their ethnic, cultural, religious, or economic background—an opportunity to come together, celebrate the renaissance and the renew and move forward with hope for a prosperous new year. The day’s focus on reconciliation and neighborliness contributes to cultural inclusiveness and cooperation among people from different backgrounds and acknowledges the richness of the Persian culture and the Persian community in California.

An Underground City Of A Different Kind

Discovering a 2000 year old underground city is always amazing. But what makes this discovery unique is that the ancient city is under the actual city of Samen, in the province of Hamedan. Samen is about 400km south-west of Tehran.

Map of Samen, near Hamedan, Iran

Telecom Technicians Noticed Something Down There

Excavations Triggered By Optical Fiber Installation Works

Excavations which continue right now, began in 2007 under the direction of the Iranian Organization of Cultural Heritage. There were always rumors from the older generations talking about secret underground houses. These rumors were intensified when the telecommunication technicians noticed some constructions underground during their work related to the new optical fiber installation in the city. The hard work of excavation of an area of approximately 3 acres around the suspected spot, finally led to the results that you see in the pictures. The city being placed in area of granite rock, made their work hard, but it is also the reason why the underground city has been kept almost unchanged since 20 centuries ago! The ancient city is just 6 meters (18 feet) below the modern one.

Underground City, Samen, Iran

Parthians Era (247 BC–224 AD)

The objects and the remains discovered (around 100 people) are most likely dated from the era of Mithridates I, Parthian King of Persia (195-135 B.C.).

Iran: The Competition Field For Airbus & Boeing

Last Tuesday, Boeing announced a tentative new deal with Iran Aseman Airlines (هواپیمایی آسمان) which can represent up to 18000 jobs in the US. The agreement is said to include up to sixty 737 Boeing airplanes for a total amount of $6B. This announcement comes after another one made last year, for a $16B with Iran Air, the national Iranian carrier.

At the same time, Airbus made similar announcements including one covering an agreement for selling 100 planes to Iran Air.

All this happens when the new US President wants on one hand to help the American industries to export more and create jobs and on the other hand does not want to appear as a friend of Iran deteriorating his relation with Israel. Hence a political test for the new administration that analysts are watching with interest.

Statista made an interesting comparison chart putting all the above in perspective.

View From The Space

Beautiful Tehran by night is seen in this magnificent picture taken from the Space by Nasa. It is of course taken at night when the stars sparkle and the moon is rising, above Tehran and the Caspian Sea. In the first picture one can see other cities in central Iran including the wonderful city of Esfahan (Ispahan).

Iran Satellite night photo – Credit: Nasa

In the magnified version of the same picture below, you have even a more impressive view of Tehran. Those who are familiar with the area can recognize in this picture three roads which connect Tehran to the Caspian sea. From up (west) to down (east) on this picture:

Chaloos Road (connecting Karaj to Chaloos)

Haraz Road ( connecting Tehran to Amol near the Caspian Sea)

Firoozkooh road (more curvy road)
